Ms. Stark's Top Ten Geeky Movies of 2011/2012

Article by: Ms. Stark

Ms. Stark was in a writing mood, she loves movies and she’s trying to become a Geek Girl. So what better way to cure/show all three than write about her favorite geeky movies from the past year and this year so far (or to come)?

10) The Amazing Spider Man (2012): This movie isn’t out yet, but I have high hopes for this film. No offense to Toby but I think Andrew will make a better Spiderman than he did. Just like Mark Ruffalo makes a better Hulk than Edward Norton did. This is also a new take on a beloved character, so that makes it all the more excited. And seemingly there is no annoying Mary Jane, just Gwen Stacy. Apparently that’s how it always should have been, Peter just settled for Mary, but he always loved Gwen. Bonus points for Reptile. Aside from Venom, Lizard was always my favorite of the Spiderman villains. Pumped for this!

Spiderman

9) 21 Jumpstreet (2012): This may not be a stereotypical geek movie. But I think it’s geeky. It was a TV show back in the 80’s and what’s more geekier than the 80’s. But idea of geek is varied though and I say this is geeky, and it was a great movie. Channing and Jonah did a good job with this film, and although I was too young to know what the original was like, I like seeing things be recycled, granted they are done well. Being very close with my mom I liked to see things that she used to like. Bonus points for *spoiler* Johnny Depp being in this movie. Good to see he supports the fact that his famous TV show got turned into a modern movie.

8) Transformers 3 (2011): All I can really say about this is that it was better than the 2nd. Not better than the first though. Michael Baysplosion’s did make a mess out of my city, but I approve. Although it begs me to question, why did the Decepticons have to attack Chicago? Couldn’t they brutally murder some other city? No? Ok…

7) Three Musketeers (2011): The Musketeers was a pretty damn good movie. It was a nice boost to an old classic. Although my favorite part was seeing Milla Jovovich, who plays the lovely Alice, from Resident Evil, another geek favorite.

6) X-Men First Class (2011): There are a few plot holes and such, and I’ll mention them. Hopefully this isn’t a spoiler for anyone but I can’t ignore the confusing/terribleness of these plot holes. At the end of X-Men First, Professor Xavier got shot in the back, thus rendering him the paraplegic superhero we know and love, YET in one of the three X-Men ‘s (I believe it was X2: X-Men United) there is a shot of Xavier and Magneto meeting a young Jean Grey, and Xavier is walking! Walking. How could he possibly be walking if he had gotten shot at a young age? Also in First Class we meet Emma Frost, but it seems as if in Origins Wolverine, we meet a young Emma Frost. Correct me anyone of I’m wrong but wouldn’t that make Emma very old? Not as old as she appeared in First Class? Whatever, regardless First Class was a very good prequel. The best out of the whole series. In my opinion of course.

X-Men First Class

5) MIB III (2012): It’s been 10 years, WOW, since the last Men In Black, but MIB Director Barry Sonnenfeld doesn’t disappoint. All 3 of these movies, despite one being years apart from the others flow very nicely. Unlike the movie series of a movie that I’ve listed above, *cough*MARVEL*cough* there are no holes in the plots. This actually ties the 3 of the movies together. Since this movie is fairly new so not everyone has seen it yet I don’t want to give away too much information but all I can say is that. A) This movie acts as both a prequel and sequel (given its back in time theme), B) it’s good to see Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones together again. C) Holy crack pipe does Josh Brolin do an AMAZING job being a young Agent K.

4) Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows aka Sherlock Holmes 2 (2011): What’s better than Robert Downey Jr? (hint hint at The Avengers thing) Nothing. Sherlock Holmes 2 I say is one of the few movies that is actually better than its prequel. RDJ and Jude Law are perfect portrayers of Sherlock and Watson. Guy Ritchie does it again, he managed this time to up the pace a little and bring on the action. The much faster and action packed sequel also added more puzzles. Naturally one tries to play along with the movie and figure out the Doctors every move, but once you think you got him nailed, he throws another curve ball. I’ve never read the series myself, yes for shame, but even without reading it, I think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be proud.

3) Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011): Do I really have to say anything about this? Yes. The only thing I need to say about this, and will say about this is that with the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, and this year’s MTV Movie Awards. The series I’ve grown up with, got ripped off. Twice. For shame. For shame, we geeks need to come to power, vote more in award shows and get our movies/shows into ballots. We can’t let movies like Twilight win anymore. We shall prevail. In honor of this film, from now on all our geeky movies need to win or get ballots. Nuff said. (Sadly Avengers is still my top, but this movie would be if Avenger’s hadn’t been released)

2) The Dark Knight Rises (2012): Yea yea, this movie hasn’t even come out yet you say, well I don’t care. I know in my heart of hearts that this movie is going to rock. Christopher hasn’t failed us yet, and I don’t think he’ll start now. I call myself a geek but sadly I don’t dwell too much into comic books and plot lines etc. The Bane I know is apparently the crappy Bane. The Bane I know is the Bane from Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin. That’s right, Poison Ivy’s loyal bumbling idiot of a henchman. But oh no, the Bane I don’t know (yet) is much more awesome, much more evil, according to my geeky sources anyways. And this excites me. Nothing makes me happier than seeing other peoples take on characters, like the darker much more depressing Bruce Wayne in these films compared to the quick witted, cheesy humor Bruce from the older films, as well as (Mayor) Adam West series. The only thing about The Dark Knight Rises that I foresee as a problem for me is seeing Anne Hathaway being Catwoman. After seeing her as Princess, I don’t think I can see her as a two-sided seductress. But only time will tell, a few more weeks fellow geekies, few more weeks.

1) The Avengers (2012): As high of hopes I have for The Dark Knight, I don’t think any movie can top, Joss Whedon’s: Avengers. Joss Whedon is pretty much awesome, he brought us this movie and he made Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly. He worked on Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long blog, Toy Story and Thor. But this movie, this was magic. I’m weird (obviously) and I judge the greatness of a movie by if I get up to go pee during it. Although I did get up, once, to go pee during The Avenger’s I held that pee as long as I possibly could. I read a lot of bad things about this movie and I simply don’t see why people think so. The story line was very well written and the character plots were well developed. I don’t want to rant on too much about this movie for those few crazy folks who haven’t seen it yet, but this movie gave me tinglies. If I had more money and there weren’t other movies coming out soon *cough darkknight cough* I would DEFINITELY see this movie again and again. Even with the loss of an amazing character *tear tear sniff sniff* and reading about hidden plots that Joss Whedon threw in there and the near death of my favorite superhero EVER, The Avengers is something I simply can’t say no to. Marvel has had a bit of a bad rap with its movies, but thank GOD, they got Joss to come save the day. Dear Marvel/Stan, get Joss for all your other movies. Thanks.
