Steampunk Bride

The lovely Duchess Silk submitted us this neat original concept character. It's always nice to see new things, here's what she said about the character and the shoot...

"The Steampunk Bride is a concept I have been working on for a long time. She started out as a burlesque routine; a jilted bride, left at the alter, rips off her veil, tears off her clothes, and embarrassed, frustrated, starts pulling apart her bouquet. In her bouquet, she finds a neon green vibrator.

*Deliberate pause*

Satisfied that she has in her possession the most useful part of her fiance, Steampunk Bride leaves the stage happy and excited. Her broken heart is forgotten, her body unashamedly nude, and the audience is thoroughly entertained. Female sexuality high fives all around!

Photography allowed me to explore and expand upon this story. Steampunk Bride, as shot by Whiskey & Rye Photography did not need the easy-to-remove clothes, the dramatic and unflattering facial expressions, the electronic personal massager punch line, that my routine did. Instead of telling the tale in three and half minutes, I could take as long as I needed...

Like all good Steampunk, this costume is a collection of things; bought, found, repurposed, and created. The veil I found in a ballet company throw out; the necklace in a comic book store; the taxidermied duckling in an op-shop. The flowers were plastic; an interesting shape, that I made more mechanical with a bit of patience and a lot of spray paint.

The garter I am particularly proud of. Just a plain, cheap garter. I bought some cap gun discs, picked out the explosives, soaked them to be doubly sure, and then decorated with more gold paint, and a little glitter. Sewn together by hand, never quite sure until I finished that it would look even slightly Steampunk...

That is what attracts me to Steampunk; the inventiveness. And the silliness. People can buy costumes, props, and jewelry. People can make them. People can find them. The more unusual, the more admired. It is form over substance. Glitter and cogs for decoration, there for no other reason than because someone wanted to put a cog there.

Hell, some very important pieces of scientific history, some priceless antiques, have probably been destroyed to create that very pretty cameo.

Isn't there something fabulous in that? Destroying something useful, to create something beautiful. Cannibalising the inner workings of machines to decorate a corset, or a top hat. It's just so glorious!"
